The Passive Voice - La voz Pasiva
La voz pasiva es similar en inglés y en español.
The passive voice in Spanish is similar in formation to the passive voice in English. It consists of a subject and a form of ser the past participle. In the passive voice, the participle functions like an adjective and agrees with the subject in gender and number.
Aquella casa fue construida en el siglo That house was built in the eighteenth
XVIII. century.
The function of the passive voice is to deemphasize the performer of the action and to
shift the focus of the sentence to the action expressed by the verb and the direct object.
To understand this, it is helpful to see passive sentences as deriving from active ones.
The performer of the action may be added to a passive sentence in a phrase beginning
with por. This is called the agent.
Aquella casa fue construida por el duque That house was built by the duke in the
en el siglo XVIII. eighteenth century.
Both ser and estar can occur with the past participle in Spanish to form passive constructions:
ser emphasizes the action of the verb, while estar focuses on the result of the action.
